Chiropractic and physiotherapy treatment for tennis elbow
Tennis elbow
Tennis elbow which is also called “lateral epicondylitis” is a painful inflammatory condition that occurs when tendons in your elbow are overloaded, usually by repetitive motions of the wrist and arm.
Considering it’s name one might think that only athletes are the only people who develop tennis elbow but it’s not like that.
People whose jobs feature the types of motions that can lead to tennis elbow include plumbers, painters, carpenters, people working on laptops for long time , housewives etc.
Lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow, involves the muscles and tendons of your forearm. Your forearm muscles extend your wrist and fingers. Your forearm tendons — often called extensors — attach the muscles to bone. They attach on the lateral epicondyle. The tendon usually involved in tennis elbow is called the Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis (ECRB).
Repetitive stress on elbow weakens the ECRB muscle, causing extremely tiny tears in the muscle’s tendon at the point where it attaches to the outside of the elbow. These tiny tears lead to inflammation and pain.
Sign & symptoms of tennis elbow
You may experience some of the following symptoms if you have tennis elbow:
- Elbow pain that is mild at first but gradually gets worse specially after activities.
- Pain travelling from the outside of the elbow down to the forearm and wrist
- A weak grip
- Increased pain when squeezing an object
- Pain when lifting something, or opening jars
- Pain at elbow while holding arm for long time.
- Mild swelling can be seen sometime on lateral side of elbow.
Treatment:-
Rest is one of the key part of treatment even if someone has been prescribed Anti-inflammatory tablet by doctors.
Bracing or splinting elbow can be done depending upon severity of pain.
Physiotherapy Treatment:-
a) Ice Therapy:- Ice pack or cold compression therapy machine can be put on inflammatory area for upto 8 to 10 mints.
b) Dry Needling:- Trigger point Dry Needling therapy has been very effective in treating Tennis Elbow. Lateral epicondylitis usually involves myofascial trigger points in the muscles of the arm & forearm, such as the brachioradialis, extensor carpi radialis muscles, extensor digitorum, and even the triceps.
c) Laser Therapy:- High power Class-4 laser therapy is very effective in lowering down pain & inflammation and allow patients to have more pain free movement around elbow.
d) PNF Eccentric control Exercise:- once the pain goes down little, combination of isotonics technique which includes concentric, static & eccentric contraction should be done with patient, more emphasis on eccentric exercise strengthens the muscles & also get active motion control.
Chiropractic Treatment:-
Chiropractors use many things to work as myofascial release like use of IASTM tool around elbow and forearm area.
Neck adjustment along with focus on concerned muscles of elbow also works for patients and gives quick relief.
