Sciatica

Sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in humans, originats in the lower back and traveling posteriorly through the lower limb as far down as the heel of the foot.

Sciatic nerve impingment leads to irritation or a electric shock like pain in the buttocks area and radiates in the lower leg .

Causes of impingment of the nerve are:

Disc herniation causing compression commonly at L5-S1

Spondylolisthesis – Anterior translation of vertebrae causing compression of nerve roots

Non spinal causes can be due to tightness of muscles most commonly Piriformis

Clinical signs and symptoms :

Unilateral leg pain greater than low back pain

Pain radiating to foot or toes

Numbness and paraesthesia in the same distribution

Straight leg raising test induces more leg pain
